With summer heat setting in, many of us are spending more time outdoors. While sunshine and warm weather can be enjoyable, extreme heat can pose some serious health risks-especially for vulnerable populations like infants, older adults, pregnant women, outdoor workers, and those with certain health conditions or medications.

This month, we’re focusing on how to stay safe and #BePrepared when the temperature soars.

Here’s How to Beat Extreme Heat

  • Set up a “heat buddy system”. Check in regularly with family, friends, and neighbors, especially those who are more vulnerable. Heat buddies can help each other stay cool and recognize signs of heat illness before it becomes dangerous.
  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Some medications can increase your risk during extreme heat. Ask if you’re at higher risk and follow their advice.
  • Stock up on summer-ready emergency supplies. Add these to your home or mini emergency kit:
    • A spray bottle or misting fan for quick cooling.
    • Non-perishable snacks and meals that don’t require cooking.
    • Extra water for each member of your household, including pets.
  • Keep your space cool. Use fans, close blinds during the day, and avoid using ovens or stoves when possible.

Extreme heat can come on quickly and last longer than expected. Stay informed by signing up for Alberta Emergency Alerts and watch for heat warnings in your area.

Mini Emergency Kit Item for June

This month add a supply of all prescription medications to your kit. You can also include a small misting bottle or spray fan.

Preparedness is a continuous effort, not a finish line. Small steps, like ensuring your vehicle is ready or preparing for power outages, can reduce stress and save lives.

Stay tuned for next month’s tips and challenge as we take the next step toward readiness. Let’s make 2025 the year we all #BePrepared.
