Hanna, Alberta – July 31, 2025

The Town of Hanna has completed lighting upgrades at both the Town Office and the Community Centre, marking a meaningful step forward in the municipality’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and operational efficiency.

Approved in mid-January and completed in June 2025, the project involved replacing outdated fluorescent lighting with modern, energy-efficient LED fixtures. These upgrades will

enhance lighting quality, reduce maintenance requirements, and generate long-term energy savings—delivering both practical and environmental benefits.

This work was made possible with support from the Government of Alberta through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s (MCCAC) Community Energy Conservation Program, a provincial funding stream designed to help Alberta municipalities reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lower energy consumption across public facilities.

Kevin Olsen, Community Services Facilities Manager said, “From an operational standpoint, the transition to LED lighting will make a noticeable difference. Not only will we lower our energy consumption, but we’ll also benefit from reduced maintenance requirements. It’s a win-win for our team and our community.”

The total project investment was $53,770, covering energy-efficient lighting retrofits at both facilities. The Town Office project cost $28,250, with an MCCAC rebate of $13,451.75, covering approximately 48% of the expense. The Community Centre upgrades cost $25,520, with a rebate of $8,251.91, covering approximately 30% of the cost.

In total, the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre contributed $21,704, while the remaining $32,066 was funded through the Town of Hanna’s 2025 capital budget. This partnership approach allowed the Town to enhance critical infrastructure while leveraging provincial support, maximizing available grant funds to reduce the financial impact on taxpayers.

Mayor Danny Povaschuk added, “This project just makes good sense. By upgrading to LED lighting, we’re saving money on our power bills and making our buildings more comfortable and efficient. It’s a practical improvement that benefits everyone who works in or visits these spaces.”

The Town of Hanna gratefully acknowledges the support provided by the MCCAC.
