As the 2025 Municipal Election approaches, residents of Hanna can expect to see campaign activity increase in the coming weeks—including lawn signs, candidate advertising, and public outreach efforts. To support a fair and respectful process for everyone, the Town of Hanna is reminding voters and candidates alike of the rules that govern campaigning, advertising, and election signage.
Election Campaigning in Our Community
Candidates running for Mayor or Council are responsible for promoting their own campaign and sharing information with the public. The Town of Hanna maintains a neutral role throughout the election and does not promote or support individual campaigns. To help ensure transparency and equal access to information, all confirmed candidates will be offered the opportunity to submit a one- to two-page campaign platform outlining their priorities and contact details. These documents will be made publicly available on the Town’s website for voters to review throughout the campaign period.
What You Won’t See in Campaign Materials
Candidates are prohibited from using the Town’s logo, tag line, brand colours, or official visuals in any campaign material. This includes printed signs, brochures, social media posts, and online advertising. Additionally, under Alberta’s Local Authorities Election Act, no advertisement—including signs, pamphlets, or flyers—may be printed or distributed that shows a marked ballot or any image that suggests a vote has already been cast for a candidate.
Rules for Campaign Signage
Residents may notice signs appearing on private property or near roadways. These signs are a common part of the election season, but they must follow clear rules to ensure public safety and respect for property:
- Signs may only be placed with the property owner’s permission.
- Campaign signs are not permitted on municipal property, including boulevards, parks, or public buildings.
- No permit is required for political campaign signs, but all signage must comply with the Town’s Land Use Bylaw (Part D, Section 11).
- All signs must be removed by October 23, 2025, following the election. The Town may remove any remaining signs after that date, with the cost of removal charged back to the candidate.
Keeping it Fair and Respectful
These guidelines are designed to protect the integrity of the election process while keeping our streets clean, properties respected, and residents properly informed. The Town encourages everyone—candidates and voters alike—to participate with fairness, transparency, and civic pride.
