In Alberta, grass fires can spark suddenly and spread with alarming speed—especially in dry, windy conditions. Whether you’re rural or urban, a single ember carried on the wind can travel for kilometres and ignite homes, outbuildings, or even entire neighborhoods. October is Fire Prevention Week, and this month, we’re focusing on how to #BePrepared for grass and wildland fires.
Grass Fire preparedness Tips:
- Create Defensible Space Around Your Home:
Remove combustible items within five feet of your home, including leaves, dried branches, firewood piles, debris, and lawn furniture. This small buffer zone can make a big difference during a fast-moving fire. - FireSmart Your Property & Livestock Areas:
Use FireSmart principles to protect barns, animal enclosures, and surrounding areas. If you have pets or livestock, develop an evacuation plan specifically for them. Have crates, leads, or trailers ready, and practice the routine if possible. - Stay Informed:
Download the Alberta Wildfire app or visit wildfire.alberta.ca to monitor current wildfires, fire bans, and restrictions in your area, Also sign up for Alberta Emergency Alert notifications on your phone. - Have a Fire Evacuation Plan:
Identify two ways out of your home and neighborhood. Know where you’d go if you had to leave, and keep a list of important phone numbers (including neighbors who may need help evacuating).
Mini Kit Challenge for October:
Add a facemask (preferably N95) to your Mini Emergency Kit to help filter smoke during wildfires. Consider adding a small bottle of eye drops or saline solution rinse to help soothe irritated eyes.
Bonus Incentive:
Don’t forget! Everyone who completes their Mini Emergency Kit by December will be entered into our #BePrepared Prize Draw. Follow along each month—each item brings you one step closer to a complete kit and a chance to win.
