Alberta summers are made for lakes, rivers, and backyard fun — but water can turn dangerous in an instant. Whether you’re boating on Prairie Oasis, tubing down the Red Deer River, or setting up a kiddie pool at home, water safety is critical for everyone, not just kids. Even strong and experienced swimmers are at risk.

The 2024 Preparedness Survey of Albertans shows that only 36% feel “very prepared” for emergencies. But when it comes to water, there’s no room for hesitation — you need to be proactive, not reactive.

Key Water Safety Tips

  • Always Supervise Children around any water, even a small amount can be hazardous.
  • Wear a lifejacket on open water, regardless of your swimming skills.
  • Avoid alcohol while boating, paddling or supervising swimmers.
  • Know the weather before heading out. Storms can develop fast and increase the risk of drowing.
  • Be river wise, currents can be unpredictable and stronger than they appear.
  • Carry a whistle, a simple signal tool that can save your life.

Mini Emergency Kit Item for July

This month we encourage you to make a copy of your identification and AHC number. This will make that important information accessible in an emergency or help a first responder identify victims.

Stay tuned for next month’s tips as we take the next step towards readiness. Let’s make 2025 the year we all #BePrepared.
