Year in Review 2020 Mayor Warwick

December 30, 2020

As you read this I imagine most of you are wishing that we didn’t review, but rather forget about the year 2020.  As the Covid 19 pandemic wreaks havoc on the entire globe, putting many business and municipalities at risk, our community have done our best to maintain a semblance of normalcy. Living in a remote region of the province has its benefits as we have had very few cases of this virus.

We all know that currently, the Government of Alberta has mandated province-wide stronger public health measures including mandatory masking, and the suspension of the services of many of our local businesses. I know this is a real challenge, especially at this time of year, and I truly sympathize with you. As a result of the new measures, all Town-owned facilities (Arena, Curling Rink, Centennial Place, Community Center etc.) are closed until these restrictions are relaxed. The Town Office is still open, however, if you can do your business without coming in, or at the very least, phoning ahead, it is greatly appreciated.  I encourage you to hang in there while we get through these tough times.

This was a very productive year in our community with several infrastructure projects being completed. We spent over 2 million dollars on the two major road/water sewer projects, one on second avenue west and the other on the north end of our residential district. We were fortunate to have a great portion of the funding derived from Federal and Provincial grants.

Another exciting infrastructure project was completed, the new Spray Park. It is anticipated that the new facility will be open sometime in the spring.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the great work that the Administration and staff are doing throughout this pandemic. Your work to prepare the town has not gone unnoticed.

In closing, I want to thank all frontline workers (medical, retail, and services industries) for doing an exemplary job taking care of the residents of our region. You should be extremely proud of yourselves.

Be Safe, Stay well.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Mayor, Council, and Administration.

Chris Warwick, Mayor, Town of Hanna
