2025 is the Year to #BePrepared

The New Year is here, and it’s the perfect time to reflect on our readiness for the unexpected. Emergencies—big or small—can happen without warning. How prepared are you to face them? According to Alberta’s 2024 Preparedness Survey, only 1 in 4 Albertans feel ready for an emergency, yet 72% recognize its importance. This year, let’s take simple, actionable steps to change that.

In 2025, we’re embarking on a year-long journey to #BePrepared. Each month, we’ll share preparedness tips and challenges, guiding you to build your own mini emergency kit. By year’s end, you’ll have the foundation for a comprehensive 72-hour or 14-day emergency kit—an essential tool for managing crises with confidence. And as a special incentive, we’ll hold a contest in December for those who have successfully assembled their own mini kit by following our monthly challenges!

Focus for January: Is Your Vehicle Ready?

When emergencies happen, your vehicle can be your lifeline—not just for evacuations but for everyday situations like a medical emergency in the middle of the night. Imagine needing to get to a hospital or assist a loved one and realizing your vehicle isn’t ready to go. This month, we’re focusing on ensuring your vehicle is equipped and ready for any situation.

  • Keep your gas tank at least half full or your electric vehicle fully charged. This ensures you’re ready to hit the road immediately, no matter the circumstances.
  • Check your tires, oil, and fluid levels. Proper maintenance prevents unexpected breakdowns when you need your vehicle most.
  • Store a few key items in your car: a flashlight, jumper cables, and a phone charger can make all the difference in an emergency.

Preparedness isn’t just about reacting to disasters; it’s about being ready for the everyday challenges that life throws our way. Take these steps now and set yourself up for success when it matters most.

Mini Emergency Kit Challenge for January

This month’s challenge is simple: choose your container! Your mini emergency kit needs a home that’s portable and easy to access. Some great options include:

  • A sturdy backpack for hands-free carrying.
  • A durable bin with a secure lid.
  • A rolling suitcase for ease of transport.

Once you’ve selected your container, set it aside. We’ll start filling it with essential items in February.

Preparedness is a continuous effort, not a finish line. Small steps, like ensuring your vehicle is ready or starting an emergency kit, can reduce stress and save lives. Stay tuned for next month’s tips and challenge as we take the next step toward readiness. Let’s make 2025 the year we all #BePrepared.
