Scapa Centennial
Scapa Celebrates in August.
The hamlet of Scapa was surveyed into four lots and three elevator sites when the CNR rail construction reached the location in 1925. J.B. Mackenzie who built and operated the first post office chose to call it Scapa drawing the name from his native Scotland. A thriving community with many amenities quickly developed and a hall was built in 1929. Dwindling population resulted in the school closing in 1968 and the children being bussed into Hanna. The store, post office and elevators continued to operate into the late seventies. Once these businesses closed, the store and post office were converted to private dwellings and the elevators were demolished in 1983. The hall continues to operate and has become a repository of local history. It also houses an heirloom piano which will be available to anyone wishing to play a few tunes.
A small but determined hall board is planning a family friendly alcohol-free Centennial Celebration on August 15-16, 2025. Our event will begin with registration and meet and greet in the early evening of Friday August 15 with snacks and beverages provided. A full day of activities on Saturday August 16 begins with a pancake breakfast followed by a parade. Various activities throughout the day include hay rides, children’s, activities, baseball and corn hole games, a pioneer photo booth, and a dedication of our new Scapa sign. A bus trip to St. Peters Church and some of the school sites will be available as well as information on the forthcoming book Hanna North II the Next Generation. The bus will also provide transportation from and to Hanna if needed. A concession will provide a hot dog lunch and refreshments throughout the day. In the evening a beef on a bun supper, music, and auction are in store. We invite all those with any connection to the Scapa area to attend.
We are requesting that those interested pre-register at scapa25infobypsauter@gmail.com as it will help with meal planning.
Posters with more details will soon be up around town and on the Scapa Hall and Hanna and Area Bulletin Boards Facebook pages.
