You will focus on grappling, ground fighting and submission holds when you learn this method of self defence. New to Hanna, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that emphasizes leverage, technique and body positioning to allow smaller, weaker practitioners to defend themselves and defeat larger opponents.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu places particular importance on controlling one’s opponent by using joint locks and chokeholds to force submission, rather than relying on strikes. It has gained widespread popularity through mixed martial arts (MMA) competitions and is practiced worldwide for both self-defense and sport.
The Town of Hanna is excited to offer this sport for a 9-week session starting Oct. 17, 2024. This nine-week block of instruction will provide the participant with an introduction to the fundamental elements of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling with a focus on self defense. Each 90-minute weekly session will include a functional warm-up, and will cover core topics in BJJ including the grounded and standing positions, escaping physical entanglement, takedowns, punch defense, choke application and defense, and effective joint locks.
Anyone 18 years of age or older with a basic level of physical fitness can participate. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is great exercise and these sessions will elevate your heart rate while also providing practical self defense benefits.
Class will run Thursdays from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm starting Oct 17 and continue for 9 weeks, ending Dec. 19 (no class Nov 14). The fee is $112.50 and pre-registration is required. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or injuries, you should speak with your doctor prior to participating.
