When Waters Rise, Be Ready

Flooding is one of the most common and costly natural disasters in Alberta. Heavy rain, rapid snowmelt, or storm surges can quickly turn into dangerous situations. This month, we’ll focus on how to prepare for potential floods.

Know your flood risk by checking local flood maps and understanding your community’s history of flooding.

Have an evacuation plan in case you need to leave quickly.

Protect important documents by storing them in waterproof containers or digitally backing them up.

Here are some steps to help you be flood-ready:

  • Prepare an emergency plan and discuss it with your family.
  • Keep sandbags or water barriers handy if you live in a flood-prone area.
  • Stay informed through local weather alerts and emergency notifications.

Mini Emergency Kit Challenge for April

This month, let’s add water to our mini emergency kit. Store at least two liters per person per day for drinking and sanitation. If space allows, consider including water purification tablets or a portable filter for extended emergencies.

And remember, completing your kit by December enters you into our year-end contest!

Preparedness is a continuous effort, not a finish line. Small steps, like ensuring your vehicle is ready or preparing for power outages, can reduce stress and save lives. Stay tuned for next month’s tips and challenge as we take the next step toward readiness. Let’s make 2025 the year we all #BePrepared.
