Meet Matthew

September 25, 2024

Introducing Matthew Norburn, Hanna’s Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Hanna. Matthew started work in September and is busy learning all about Hanna. Since he is new to Hanna, we thought it appropriate to ask him to provide some information about himself. Here goes!

I was born in Bolton, England, before moving to Canada when I was ten years old—a shift that introduced me to new opportunities and helped shape who I am today. I attended Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where I spent many years contemplating my future in the student union building. I’ve spent most of my professional life working in recreation for various municipalities, helping to create programs and opportunities that bring people together. I also had the chance to serve as a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), which gave me valuable insight into leadership, municipal management and strategic planning.

Previously, I was heavily involved in baseball as a player, coach and serving on the board of the British Baseball Federation. I also practiced Jiu-Jitsu, but I’ve since decided that I’d rather not be thrown around anymore! Now, my focus is on spending quality time with my family—my wife and our young daughter. We are incredibly happy to be living in Hanna.

Some fun useless facts about Matthew:

Most useless talent: I can easily complete one side of a Rubik’s cube!
TV character you’d pick to be your best friend: I’d pick J.R. Ewing. Sure, he’s ruthless, scheming, and could probably outfox me at any opportunity, but imagine being on his side. Having a best friend who always comes out on top would be pretty useful-as long as I stay on his good side.
The oddest job you’ve had: I once helped a friend who ran a fencing business when he was short-staffed. Let’s just say, I’m no good at building fences.
Most interesting place you’ve visited: The most interesting place I’ve ever visited was Venice—such a beautiful city! Unfortunately, I was there on an 18-30 tour group, and the less said about that experience, the better. But, the canals, history and architecture were special.
Your favorite childhood memory: My favourite childhood memory is riding my bike to baseball games. It was just a fun way to get there, and I always looked forward to the ride and the game.
Sports fan or Arts fan? I’m a sports fan, especially when it comes to baseball. I’ve had a love affair with the game since I was young. My favourite team is the Blue Jays, but honestly, I love all baseball—the sights, the sounds, and the game’s rich history. There’s just something about the game.
What are you most excited about in your new town and role? What am I most excited about? Honestly, everything! It’s a great opportunity to collaborate with an amazing team of staff and council members to tackle new projects and make a positive impact. Maybe I’ll get a chance to try my hand at building fences again, although, I’m pretty sure Public Works wouldn’t appreciate my fence building skills!
