Power Up Your Preparedness

Power outages can strike without warning, leaving you in the dark—literally. From winter storms to unexpected grid failures, having a plan can keep you safe and comfortable  you’ll be light years ahead when the lights go out. This month, for our year of preparedness, we will focus on how to be ready for power outages.

According to Alberta’s Power Outages Resource:

  • Power outages often occur during extreme weather, so be current on your emergency plan.
  • Keep a list of important phone numbers, such as your emergency contacts and your utility providers – you don’t want to be left disconnected.

Here are some steps to help you be ready:

  • Have flashlights and extra batteries ready – a brilliant tool.
  • Ensure you have chargers for your devices. A fully charged portable power bank can keep you phone running in an emergency.
  • Know the website or hotline for your utility provider to stay informed. Don’t be left powerless.

Mini-Emergency Kit Challenge for February

It’s time to add the first item to your mini emergency kit. In January, we asked you to select a suitable container. Read about it here, 2025 is the Year to #BePrepared. This month, we are asking you to look after your communications devices and ensure you have chargers ready to go.

  • A vehicle phone charger so your phone isn’t running on empty when you are on the road.
  • A wall charger to be sure you can plug back in once power is restored.

Add one or both of these items to the container you selected last month to take charge of your preparedness. You are one step closer to completing your mini-emergency kit and winning the prize, valued at over $100. Shocking, right? All participants who assemble their kits by December will be entered into our year-end contest. We guarantee, the prize will be worth it.

Preparedness is a continuous effort, not a finish line. Small steps like preparing for power outages can reduce stress and save lives. Stay tuned for next month’s tips and challenge as we take the next step toward readiness. 2025 is the year we will all #BePrepared.
