I am often approached for guidance safeguarding against burglaries and enhancing the chances of retrieving stolen goods. I have developed this series of articles aimed at helping home owners prevent becoming a target. This week we will look at the fourth principle of the four core principles, which are deter, impede, alert and summon.
As we near the conclusion of our home security series, we focus on the principle of Summoning help in the event of a break-in. Explore effective ways to be a vigilant witness and a proactive 911 caller, crucial for aiding authorities and safeguarding your community. Let’s ensure your readiness to respond to emergencies.
Be a Good Witness and Cooperative 911 Caller – If you see something or someone suspicious, don’t hesitate to call the police. Although we frequently patrol, we have a large area, and we are much more likely to stop crimes in progress by receiving calls from attentive residents right away.
Obtaining the license plate of an involved vehicle and a good description of anyone involved can be key in locating those involved. Call 911 if you suspect a crime in progress, and calmly answer the questions asked by the 911 operator. The questions being asked by the operator do not delay the dispatch of an officer. Police will be dispatched in the background while the operator is still asking questions, as long as they know the address involved. If you are calling about a rural property, provide the ‘blue sign’ address whenever possible.
