Freedom to Read Week

Sun February 21 at 8:00 am to 5:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 8:00 am, repeating until February 27, 2021

Freedom to Read Week (February 21-27) is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed to them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Despite having strong traditions of free expression and free inquiry, Canada also has a long-standing tradition of censorship. Historically, books and magazines have often been quietly removed from libraries and classrooms. Freedom to Read Week was founded in 1984 to challenge the covert nature of censorship, creating a broader awareness of these ongoing challenges to Canadian writing. The website freedomtoread.ca has an updated list of books that have been challenged and/or banned in Canadian libraries and schools.

Chances are, you’ve read a book on the list! Looking for a book? Contact the library at 403-854-3865.
